Happy Valentine’s Day

Received flowers and candy from my love. Not bad for 37 years!

I ordered a ton of seeds from Baker Creek last night. Before starting seeds though, there is a whole lot of weeding to do. A few days of rain have increased the volume of growth exponentially.

The ordered seeds were mostly melons and tomatoes. One okra variety and a couple of carrots in orange, yellow and red.

Come on Spring Time!

Round-Up Time

Besides being in love with my new grandchild, I am extremely proud of my son’s completion of his graduate degree this month. With the diploma in hand, I expect him to fly off to somewhere far, far away. Maybe Hong Kong or Japan. Sad for me, happy for him.

A third big event comes via my spouse. He has decided to retire this December. He just received his 40-year service, so I think it is the right choice. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Last, I can report that my last summer’s volunteer cherry tomato plant has a million blossoms on it. It has survived winter rain and cold and come out on the other side.  I expect to have cherry tomatoes in my salad in another month. I’ve named the plant Maggie.

Finally Spring is here!

Although a bit windy today, it may get up to 70 degrees today and perhaps into the 80’s by the weekend! The weeds in the back are enormous now. A ton of work is needed to clear it all out and plant veggies. I have a few sweet peas (deep purple) and maybe some Scarlett runners (no blossoms yet).

The best spring gift is the arrival of my grandson! Both mom and baby are doing great and I am in love with him already. I can see both my son and daughter-in-law in the baby. He is gaining weight and sleeping more.

Countdown

There is a lot of counting download at my place. Counting down until I can plant some tomatoes in the ground, pick the first rose bouquet, as well plant other veggies. But the most exciting countdown is for the arrival of my first grandson. He is due April 8th. My daughter-in-law is ready.  I confess I have mixed emotions about becoming a grandparent. I’m not sure I feel old enough, yet I am so excited to welcome a new baby.

Dreary Days

Gray skies and a smattering of rain yesterday and today makes my mood “blah”. But. We had a lovely time yesterday at my son and daughter-in-laws baby shower. We were able to visit with people we don’t normally get to see that often. It’s going to be a boy. Only four weeks to go. We are all excited since this is a first grandchild.

On the garden front, I am pleased to see multiple buds on my lemon tree. The first in two years! I am still getting Meyer lemons from a much smaller tree as well. There are blossoms on my donut peach tree too.  I fear the gopher has eaten my sweet pea seeds that I planted a couple of weeks ago. I should have seen some growth by now. This is so frustrating.

I’m coming up on the second anniversary of  my fight with cancer. I was fairly stressed about it last year. Not as much this year but I will feel better once my next round of tests are clear. The longer I go without a reoccurrence, the better my odds.

Visiting

This was one of the best Labor Day weekends in a long time. We flew to San Diego to  visit my son and his new condo. Unbelievably he did some painting himself. Not my colors for sure, but it isn’t my place. We attended an alumni game (3-3) and a very competitive soccer game with our side winning 3-2. It was a nail-biter!

We also spent most of the day at Balboa Park which is a jewel. No parking or entry fees. Lots of parking available. That always starts the day off nicely. There really is something for everyone. A beautiful playground, botanical garden, museums, restaurants and my favorite, the artist colony. We can watch the artists at work and buy something if you like.

Monday, before our flight home, we spent time at the new condo with my son’s friends and family from the other side. Interesting to watch my husband and his ex-wife chatting about old times. I met my son’s sister (long story and not for here) and her son and talked about everything.

Both flights were down-right easy for this woman who hates to fly. It is becoming less scary since I realize that one can get hit by a bus, or get cancer etc. You never know and so now I worry less about a crashing plane. LOL

Oh, and I had a birthday too.  A. Big. One. You know, the kind with a “0” in it. Again, the alternative isn’t good so I’m embracing the time. Had cake, flowers, etc. and lots of family to share the time with.

Nice.

Sage, rosemary & thyme

For my son and daughter-in-law I made a very large pot of three blackberry starts as well as another pot full of sage, rosemary and thyme–no strawberries though 😉

I think they liked the idea anyway of the plants although I’m not sure if at this point with a new house and all, that they wanted the added “pressure” of something else to take care of. LOL Anyway, no pressure from me, I just wanted them to have something that might get them out of the house once in a while and in the dirt. We will see.

Silly me, tried a new face cream about a week ago, still red and pealing with no end in sight. Boy do I look a mess. Swollen eye lids, cheeks, forehead. If I didn’t have to go to work everyday the situation might be considered funny. No so much when I must face everyone who have politely ignored the obvious problem. Still doing the “live and learn” thing. In other news, I’m more than ready to shed my wig and face the world with my new but still very short hair. At least I was until my face blew up. Now I will wait until I look a little more human. The wig has bangs which hide at least some of the mess. LOL

Anniversary Brunch

We are off to Mimi’s for a brunch with family in celebration of our anniversary. Tomorrow my other half will have repair surgery. He *should* be in and out but you just don’t know. He is afraid that it will be more extensive than expected based on the pain and previous problem. Only time will tell.

I got the blackberries and herbs potted up for the kids but haven’t given to them yet. When they visit the next time I’ll present them. They are not currently what you would call gardeners but perhaps this will inspire them to start? Stranger things have happened.

Wooh, seeing the weather in the East, I’m glad not to travel in snow and wind. Everyone be careful out there!

Wow! Thirty-two years of marriage today. Mazel tov to me and the hubs! I don’t think we are looking more alike, although some may disagree. He was about 1/2″ shorter than me when we first married. Now, it is more like 3 inches, maybe more. A different kind of shrinkage, eh?  He is still a New Yorker and I’m a native California. Most of the time that is agreeable. Occasionally not. Why do New Yorker’s talk and eat at the same time so that you must look at the food being chewed? Is this a personal trait or what? Even after all these years I have a hard time with it. It is always the small things that get you going. Fortunately, he eats so fast that I don’t have to watch for long 😉

It is the last night of Chanukah and one son and daughter-in-law will come for dinner. Sunday, we will have a brunch out with another son who is coming this weekend. I just looked at the calendar for next year’s Chanukah. Yikes it starts on Dec 1st, just after Thanksgiving! Have to be ready for both then can relax!

The weather has moderated so that we aren’t in the 40’s during the day. More like 50-65 and no rain this week. We need more rain so I’m not complaining.

Received my Baker Street garden catalog and sent a wonderfully leisure evening picking out all the seeds that I want for 2010. It sure is easy to go overboard what with all the gorgeous photographs in the catalog! I’m only up to about $35 so that’s not too bad, is it?

Shopping Quest

I started the gift shopping early this year and have really been on a roll. I have the staff finished unlike the family. My better half is very very very difficult to gift. Why you ask? Because he buys everything you could possibly imagination as soon as he sees it. So, a favorite author–he has bought it. DVD–same. Clothes–not allowed to buy for him. Electronics–you have got to be kidding. So, what I end up doing is finding quirky, dust-catchers with no useful purpose. Think Wonder Woman bookmarks or Hear-See-Speak no Evils. The other possibilities–calendar, journals, unusual CD, etc., you know, the safe but rather boring gifts.

Of course, as with most things this year, I am not really and truly complaining since I am here (meaning alive) so not finding the “perfect” gift can be put in to perspective, eh? Only this weekend and next to finish. Oh and remember to buy an anniversary gift would be good.
