Garden Update

Apologies for the lack of posts. Work has been overwhelming me and by the time I’m finished with all that computer work, I don’t want to touch the computer.

I spent Sunday cleaning the back patio and putting together a glider bench with one of my sons. The patio looks better than it has in a long, long time. I still have the garden supplies and tools to move to a new spot, which will give more room for people.

The garden is coming along. The two sunflowers are about 4 feet tall already and looking strong. The weakest plants are the peppers although I’m not sure why. I have many green tomatoes and the squash are coming along too.

The mardarin orange that is in a big pot now has volunteer tomatoes and either squash, pumpkin or melon growing at its base. I used some potting soil used for seeds two years ago! The seeds had not germinated so I emptied the pots back into the soil bin. LOL I hope that some of them will transplant into the planting beds.

Update, photos.

Wind, Rain, Sleet, Hail, Thunder and Snow

The weather was quite something today. We had wind, rain, sleet, hail and thunder too. The hills even had some snow this morning! I am happy to have a window in my cubicle so I can see the outside. I have a lovely tree outside my window that changes with the season.  The wind was blowing the rain sideways on to the window which is why I heard when the hail started. A co-worker and I had returned from a walk in the sun just an hour or so when all of the fun stuff started!.

We are supposed to have a short break in the rain starting tomorrow afternoon and until Sunday afternoon.

I am hoping that this will give me enough time to plant a few seeds in my raised beds. My Baker Creek order has arrived and I would like to get started on the cool weather items:

  • Sweet Pea Dolly Darden
  • Tonda di Parigi Carrots
  • Harris Model Parsnips
  • Lilac PomPom Poppy
  • Mother of Pearl Poppy
  • Mizuna Greens

This is by no means my full order. Other seeds such as tomato, watermelon, squash, okra, sunflowers, etc., will need to either be started first or wait until warmer weather to sow. I will post the varieties in the spring.

I received excellent news today on my latest blood work. I know that I won’t be doing chemo for at least the next 3 months. A CT scan and more blood work will follow then. It is a little crazy to try living each day and not thinking about what might happen 3 months down the road. Some of the weight I’ve been carrying is off my shoulders at least for a while. 2010 is looking good so far!

Green hills

The rainy weather has put the green back on our hills. Beautiful during this time of year to see them. With predictions of a week of rain, we should keep the green for a good while.

I sent off my seed order last night. I went a little overboard with the bean order. Dry beans and green. Watermelons–of course! Plus a few flowers — poppies, sunflowers and sweet peas.

The days are getting noticeably longer. I can get home before it is completely dark. Of course, I only have a 3 mile commute. 🙂

In stitches

I no longer look like a sister of Frankenstein as my stitches came out today. There is still lots of healing to do but I have at least 3 weeks before any chemo will begin. Emotions are quite close to the surface at this point but I try not to dwell on the dark side.

On my gardening side, my roses are almost ready to break out, irises are ready to be picked and all the trees are green. If I have enough energy, I will try to get the winter squash put in the ground and re-pot the tomato seedlings. If I can work sitting down, I do better than trying to stand. I will bring my camera along and post some flower pictures.

SF Flower and Garden Show

I had been looking forward to going to the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show but as it turns out, I will be out of town on the Saturday that I would be able to attend. Drat. Unless someone takes over the business, this will be the last year.  I can’t image the amount of work involved in pulling together this monster event.

Sigh.

On a happier note, my new Donut Peach is in glorious pink bloom along with white apricot blossoms. My SweetPeas are still producing red, blue, purple, and white flowers and yes, they smell heavenly.
