Yikes, how did a month go by without a post? I’ve been terribly busy at work for sure but still. I’ll try to do better.

It seems that it rained all of February. The weeds are about 4 feet high. Apparently the rain does not depress them at all. Rain is scheduled for tonight and tomorrow with as much as one inch in total. That’s a lot of rain for us. Maybe Sunday will be dry. Maybe. Despite all the rain I did manage to plant 4 tomatoes plants, one in the raised bed and the others in pots. I also replaced the dead citrus with a mandarin and Meyer lemon. Both have nice buds on them. I hope not to kill these.

Happy New Year to All!

I  am happy to be in 2010. As you may have read here, 2009 was a difficult year for me and my family. Hoping for only good news on the health front this year.

I received  several seed catalogs and have been planning what I am going to purchase.

  • Tomatoes – trying some new heirlooms
  • Melons – yellow-fleshed watermelon and Russian variety
  • Lettuce – mix of small-leaved salad
  • Kale – curly-leaf
  • Swiss chard –maybe, first planting was eaten by something
  • Onions – in the ground already
  • Beans – Scarlett Runner
  • Sunflowers – really missed them when I didn’t plant them last year
  • Cotton – just to see if they will grow here in California

Fruit trees

  • more apples, another Lady (christmas apple)
  • lemon Meyer
  • lime – sweet Asian

Not sure this is all but it is a start. I may add some other annuals to the list. Just looking a the catalogs like Baker Street makes me smile. I have another opportunity to learn and do better in the garden.

What are you planning for the new decade and this year?

  • pomegrante
  • fig

I purchased a gooseberry bush and three blackberry bare roots. The blackberry will go to my son who loves blackberries and now has a backyard in which to plant them. Hope he likes them!

Lost weekend

This past weekend was a lost one. Nausea and pains were my best friends. I tried to go back to work on Monday but had to come home. Today was much better although I still get tired very quickly.

On Tuesday, I received a very unexpected surprise gift of a quilt. Something to keep me warm during chemo. My quilter friend and co-worker suprised the heck out of me. I have had nothing but great support from co-workers. bless them one and all.

I had a lovely lunch with my sister. We had lots to catch up on and I miss seeing her more often.

It is good that figs are strong. I actually have some tiny figlets on my 2 year old tree that I planted in a pot. I saw the squirrel trotting off with one of my donut peaches. I hope it gives him a belly ache!

I haven’t been consistent with my poor plants and I’ll be lucky not to lose more than I already have. Only the weeds are happy. I hope for a clean start in the fall when I’m done with all the chemo.

We hope to take a short trip next week. I have some vacation time and it will be put to good use. A little R&R sounds delightful

SF Flower and Garden Show

I had been looking forward to going to the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show but as it turns out, I will be out of town on the Saturday that I would be able to attend. Drat. Unless someone takes over the business, this will be the last year.  I can’t image the amount of work involved in pulling together this monster event.

Sigh.

On a happier note, my new Donut Peach is in glorious pink bloom along with white apricot blossoms. My SweetPeas are still producing red, blue, purple, and white flowers and yes, they smell heavenly.
